Capt. Charles Russell Lowell Jr. is killed in Virginia.
October 19, 1864
Lowell is killed leading a Cavalry charge on the first day of the Battle of Cedar Creek near the town of Middleton. Two days later, a letter signed by President Abraham Lincoln promoting Lowell to brigadier general arrives in camp. Gen. Philip Sheridan later calls Lowell, “The perfection of a man and a soldier.”
