Holton Library (first) opens.

September 1, 1864

[1872-bath, 1873] Supported through a bequest by James Holton, it takes over the collection of the Brighton Library Association, and opens on the first floor of Brighton Town Hall. it contains 10,000 volumes and is one of the largest libraries in the area. The library moves to a new building (second) on Academy Hill Road in 1874.*
