Santayana (George) is born in Madrid, Spain.

December 16, 1863

The son of Don Augustin and Josefina (BorrĂ¡s) de Santayana (widow of Bostonian George Sturgis), George Santayana moves with his family to Boston, and lives at 302 Beacon Street from 1871 to 1880, which he subsequently describes as “A small house with only two manor rooms per floor, but all day sun and a marvelous river and sunset view from the rear.” Santayana graduates from Boston Latin School and Harvard College, studies in Europe, and returns to Harvard to receive a doctorate and teach philosophy. He leaves Boston for Europe, never to return, in 1912.* Santayana dies in Rome on September 26, 1952.
