Thanksgiving is made a national holiday in Washington, D.C.

President Lincoln signs legislation that makes the last Thursday in November a holiday in hopes of promoting national unity. Congress and the president were persuaded to create the holiday after a long campaign led by Bostonian Sarah Josepha Hale. The date is changed to the fourth Thursday in 1941.
