Fifty-Fifth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry leaves Boston on board the Recruit for South Carolina.

The regiment was formed as a result of the surplus of African-American volunteers who had attempted to enlist in the Fifty-Fourth Regiment. It arrives at Folly Island, South Carolina, on August 9, 1863.
