Gov. John A. Andrew offers Robert Gould Shaw Jr. command of the Massachusetts fifty-Fourth Regiment.
January 30, 1863
Andrew makes the offer in a letter to Shaw’s father. After initially refusing, Shaw Jr. is convinced to accept it by his mother. Andrew subsequently declares, “I know not, Mr. Commander, where in all human history . . . a work at once so proud, so precious, so full of hope and glory, as the work committed to you.”
