(Dec.) Atlantic Monthly. The article describes Holmes’ search for his son, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., who was wounded at the Battle of Antietam in Virginia on September 17, 1862. In it, Holmes Sr. describes the battlefield as being “like the table of some hideous orgy left uncleared.” Father and son were subsequently united in Pennsylvania.
