Ninth Massachusetts Regiment sails from Long Wharf.

June 25, 1862

Known as the “Irish Ninth,” it is made up largely by members of the disbanded Columbian Guard and is commanded by Thomas Cass. As the regiment marches to its ships, he is presented with the regiment’s green flag by Mrs. Harrison Gray Otis. The incident is said to illustrate improved relations between Yankees and Irish in Boston. The regiment sees action at Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, and Malvern Hill.
