Arlington Street Church is dedicated.
December 12, 1861
Architect: Arthur Gilman. Originally the Federal Street Church (fourth), it is designed in the Georgian style, inspired by London’s Church of St Martin-in-the-Fields, and located at 355 Boylston Street. The first church and first public building in the newly-created Back Bay, it is built on 999 pilings. Its exterior façade is made of New Jersey brownstone and its interior includes windows designed by Tiffany. They were installed between 1899 and 1929 and memorialize former congregants of the original Federal Street Church. The church contains an Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ installed in 1957. Dan McLean Greeley serves as pastor from 1935 to 1958. The building is restored by Robert Neiley in 1985 and by Goody, Clancy and Associates in 1996.
