Joseph Wightman is reelected mayor of Boston.

December 9, 1861

Wightman (Union and Citizens Party), with 6,765 votes, defeats Edward Tobey, with 5,795, and others to be reelected to his second consecutive term as mayor. During this term, he campaigns against the draft.
