Sixth Massachusetts Volunteer Militia is attacked in Baltimore.
April 19, 1861
Four soldiers are killed and 12 civilians when the regiment is attacked by a pro-Confederate mob after disembarking from their train en route to Washington, D.C. Formed on January 21, 1861, the Sixth Massachusetts is made up primarily of men from Lawrence and Lowell, and had left Boston on April 17, 1861, two days after President Abraham Lincoln had issued a call for 75,000 volunteers to defend the union.
