Lomasney (Martin) is born in the West End.

December 3, 1859

The son of Irish immigrants, Martin Lomasney is born on South Margin Street, attends the Mayhew School, is orphaned at age 11, and leaves school to sell newspapers and shine shoes. He gets a job as a city lamplighter from a local politician, founds the Hendricks Club in the West End in 1885,* and becomes the most formidable ward boss in the city, providing services and jobs to constituents in return for their votes. Known as “The Mahatma,” Lomasney lives at 27 McLean Street, and serves in various public offices beginning in 1892.* Lomasney dies at the Hotel Bellevue on August 12, 1933.
