Engine Company No. 8 Firehouse (first) opens.

It is located in a building built around 1800 at 12 North Bennet Street. The firehouse moves to a new location (second) on Salem Street in 1869,* to a new building (third) in 1917,* and then to its current location (fourth) on Hanover Street in 1948.* The original building is purchased by a North End businessman, who subsequently adds two stories and converts it back to a residential property.
