Charles Sumner is reelected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts.

January 13, 1857

Sumner is overwhelmingly reelected by the Massachusetts Senate after receiving similar support in the Massachusetts House of Representatives on January 9, 1857. It is in marked contrast to his narrow victory six years earlier. In a letter to him afterwards, his friend Henry Dana writes, “No one can say now that you have not a constituency behind you.”
