Sullivan (Louis H.) is born in the South End.

September 3, 1856

The son of Irish immigrants, Louis Sullivan is born at 22 South Bennett Street (then Bennett Place), attends the Rice School, graduates from English High School, and moves to Chicago to work for the architectural firm of William LeBaron Jenney. After studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, he returns to Chicago, becomes a partner in the firm of Adler and Sullivan (1881-1895), and a leader in the so-called “Chicago School” of architecture. He dies in Chicago on April 14, 1924.
