Pro-Slavery forces sack the “Boston abolition town” of Lawrence, Kansas.

May 21, 1856

The mob abducts a number of Free-Soil leaders. Three days later, after learning of the attack on Lawrence and the attack on US Sen. Charles Sumner in Washington, John Brown and his followers kill five pro-slavery settlers later in retaliation, in what comes to be known as the Pottawatomie murders.
