1855

The team beats the Elm Tree Club on Boston Common. The first baseball game played in Boston, it is played under the rules of the “Massachusetts Game” or “New England Game,” which involves a smaller ball and closer bases than today’s game. The rules also allows throwing the ball at runners in an effort to “soak” them or get them out. The first baseball games played in Boston under the “New York” rules, which are more similar to those of today’s game, takes place in 1858.
