Temple Israel (first) is established.

September 30, 1854

(Sept.) Originally Temple Kahal Kadosh Adath Israel, the congregation meets initially in a rented building on Pleasant Street at the corner of today’s Broadway and Melrose Street. The second synagogue in Boston, it was formed in 1853 by German Jews after a dispute with Polish Jews at Temple Ohabei Shalom. Joseph Sachs is the first rabbi and Solomon Schindler serves as rabbi from 1874 to 1893. The congregation becomes Reform congregation in the 1870s, moves to a new building (second) on Columbus Avenue in 1885,* another (third) on Commonwealth Avenue in 1907,* and to its current building (fourth) on Longwood Avenue in [1926-DD] 1973.*
