East Boston Sugar Refinery begins to manufacture granulated sugar.

It is the first granulated sugar in Boston. The company pioneers the process by raking moist refined sugar on steam tables to dry and separate into crystals. Previously, sugar was packed in barrels or shaped into loaves or cones.
