Chickering & Sons Piano Factory (second) is built.
1853
Architect: Edwin Payson. It is located at 791 Tremont Street. Built around a central courtyard, the steam-powered factory is the second largest building in the U.S. after the Capitol building and employs some 400 workers. The company moves out of Boston in 1928 and the building is used for other industrial and commercial purposes. It is renovated by Gelardin, Bruner/Cott & Associates and becomes an artist housing and studio cooperative in 1974.*
