Sovereign of the Seas is launched from Donald McKay’s shipyard.

McKay’s largest clipper ship up to that time at 2,421 tons and 265 feet, it is the largest clipper ship built up to that time in America. The ship sets a record for that time of the year on her first voyage, arriving in San Francisco in 103 days, despite having lost its mast rounding Cape Horn.
