Dorchester & Roxbury Street Railway is established.

The Metropolitan and Cambridge, Broadway, Dorchester Avenue and Chelsea lines are established from 1854 to 1856 and begin operating in 1857.* According to Walter Allen of the Special Street Railway Commission of 1897, between 1852 and 1888 when the lines were first electrified, more than 560 miles of track were laid in Boston.
