Independence Day is celebrated on Boston Common.

Some 100,000 people attend the annual event, which is delayed by four days due to rain. It includes a fireworks display designed by Hammatt Billings, that is described as “the largest and most gorgeous pyrotechnical structure ever produced in this country.” Billings improves on his display in 1853.*
