Minot’s Ledge Light begins operating off Cohasset.

January 1, 1850

It is located on Minot’s Ledge. The first lighthouse in the U.S. built in the ocean, it is destroyed by a storm in 1851* and replaced in 1860. Its lighting pattern – one dash, pause, four dashes, pause, three dashes – is said to represent the words “I love you.”
