Fernald (Walter E.) School is established.

1848

Originally the Massachusetts School for the Feeble-Minded, it is founded by Samuel Gridley Howe and is an outgrowth of a program at the Perkins School for the Blind at 535 East Broadway. The first publicly-supported school for people with intellectual disabilities in the U.S., it moves to Waltham in 1887, is named for Walter Fernald, its third director in 1925, and closes in 2014.
