Brookline Branch Railroad begins service.

A branch of the Boston & Worcester Railroad, the line runs initially from Kenmore Square to Brookline Village. It is extended by the Charles River Branch Railroad to Newton Upper Falls in 1853. The line, subsequently called the Highland Branch, is taken over by the Boston & Worcester Railroad in 1882, and extended to the Charles River in 1884. It is taken over by the M.T.A. in 1957, and converted to a streetcar line in 1959.*
