New England Confectionary Company is established.
1847
Originally Chase and Company and founded by English immigrant brothers Oliver and Silas Chase, it is located initially on Congress Street. The first and oldest candy manufacturer in the U.S., its success comes after the company pioneers two innovations beginning in 1866.* The company moves to a new building at 253 Summer Street in 1902,* and merges with Forbes, Hayward and Company (est. 1848) and Wright and Moody (est. 1856) to form the New England Confectionary Company (NECCO) in 1901, and manufactures its eponymously-named candy wafers in Central Square in Cambridge from 1927 until 2003. It subsequently moves its operations to Revere and closes after declaring bankruptcy in 2018.
