Boston Herald is first published.
August 31, 1846
Originally the evening edition of the Boston Eagle it is published initially on Devonshire Street (first). William Eaton is the first editor. It becomes the first regular Sunday newspaper in Boston May 1861, merges with the Traveler in 1912, moves to 171 Washington Street (second) in 1851, then to new buildings on Washington Street (third) in 1878,* Tremont Street (fourth) in 1906,* Mason Street (fifth) in 1932,* and Herald Street (sixth) in 1959.* It becomes the Boston Herald Traveler in 1967, is purchased by the Hearst Corporation, becomes the Record American/Herald Traveler in June 1972, the Boston Herald American in January 1973, and a tabloid in September 1981. It is purchased by Rupert Murdoch in 1982, again becomes the Boston Herald, is purchased by Patrick Purcell in 1994,* moves to Fargo Street (seventh) in 2012,* is purchased by Digital First Media, and moves to Braintree in 2018.
