Old Colony Railroad begins operating.

November 10, 1845

[11/8] [1844] The line operates initially from between today’s South Boston and Quincy. Incorporated on March 16, 1844, the line is extended to downtown Boston in 1846 [6/1844-DHS] and subsequently to Plymouth and Fall River, where passengers can board Old Colony Steamship Company boats to New York City. It absorbs the Boston & Providence Railroad in 1888 and is leased to the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad in 1893, ceases local operation after construction of the Southeast Expressway on June 30, 1959, and is revived by the MBTA in 2007.*
