Boston & Maine Railroad begins operating.

(July) The line operates initially from a temporary station at the corner of Traverse Street and Canal Street. Incorporated in 1841 and originally a branch of the Boston & Portland Railroad, the company takes over the Boston & Lowell Railroad in 1887, and is absorbed by the New York, New Haven in 1909.
