Boston & Fitchburg Railroad begins operating.

The passenger line runs initially from Charlestown along the route that had been proposed for a canal to the Connecticut (and Hudson) rivers. Service is extended to Boston on March 4, 1845. The line is leased by the Boston & Maine Railroad in 1900 and merged with it in 1919.
