Bunker Hill Monument is dedicated.
June 17, 1843
Architect: Solomon Willard. The base is designed by Arthur Vinal. Built of 6,700 tons of Quincy granite, the obelisk is located in Monument Square. President John Tyler and 13 veterans of the battle attend the event the dedication ceremony. As he did for the laying of the cornerstone 18 years earlier, Daniel Webster delivers the oration. In his speech, he declares, “[The monument shall prompt] from every youthful breast, the ejaculation ‘thank God, I – I also – AM AN AMERICAN.’” The first major Revolutionary War monument in the U.S., it is also the first monument in the U.S. to honor a group of soldiers rather than an individual officer, and the tallest structure in the U.S. at this time.
