James (Henry) is born in New York City.

The son of Henry and Mary (Walsh) James and brother of William James, Henry James is educated privately, mostly in Europe, arrives in Boston in May of 1864, lives with his family, initially at 13 Ashburton Place and then in Cambridge, and studies briefly at Harvard Law School. He begins to publish short stories and criticisms in 1866, travels in Europe, and settles in London in 1876. James goes on to become one of the leading novelists of his time and is sometimes referred to as “The Master.” He dies in London on February 28, 1916, and is buried in the Cambridge (Massachusetts) Cemetery.
