Charles Goodyear develops the process for the vulcanization of rubber in Woburn.
January 31, 1839
(Jan.) Goodyear perfects the process while living in a boarding house in East Woburn. He receives a patent for the first successful process to vulcanize rubber on June 15, 1844, but spends years protecting his process and defending his patent.
