Lion Theatre opens.
January 11, 1836
Built on the former site of the Lion Tavern, it is located at today’s 545 Washington Street. The theater opens with performances by dramatic, ballet, and equestrian companies. Built originally a hippodrome for equestrian performances, it is subsequently converted to the Mechanics Institute, a lecture and concert hall. The buildings in front of the theater are torn down and stores are constructed in their place in the summer of 1836. It becomes the Melodeon Theatre in 1839.*
