Paine Furniture Company is established.

It is located initially on Blackstone Street. It begins as a shop run by cabinetmaker Leonard Shearer. John Paine joins the business in 1845. It moves to Haymarket Square a few years later, builds a new building (first) on Canal Street in 1871,* and another (second) on Arlington Street in 1914.*
