Boston Stock Exchange is established.
October 13, 1834
Originally the Brokers’ Board, it is founded by Peter Paul Francis Degrand and others and meets initially in the Washington Bank at 47 State Street. It is the third oldest stock exchange in the U.S. (the first was the New York Stock Exchange, est. May 17, 1792). Initially, only the stocks of local banks and insurance companies are traded. Samuel Dana is the first president. It moves to the Merchants Exchange Building in May 1844, to the Union Bank Building at 40 State Street on March 28, 1853, to the Howe Building at 13 Exchange Street in 1863, to the Merchants Exchange Building at 53 State Street in 1881, and to a new building at 100 Franklin Street in 1910.* The exchange closes when it is acquired by NASDAQ in 2007.
