Refuge of Oppression column first appears in The Liberator.

The column occupies the top left front page of the newspaper. Its purpose, according to publisher William Lloyd Garrison, is “To show how ridiculous, false and malignant are the doctrines of our opponents, and their representations of anti-slavery men and measures.”
