Children’s Friend Society is established.

An adoption agency, it is located at 36 – 48 Rutland Street. Incorporated in 1834, its purpose is “for the support of indigent children, who are either fully surrendered to it, or received as boarders.” The organization builds its first orphanage on Rutland Street in 1845.* The orphanage closes and the society moves across the street into offices at 45 Rutland Street in 1927. It becomes part of South End House in 1930, and merges with the Children’s Aid Association by 1942. It becomes Boston Children’s Services in 1960.
