Missing Friends Column first appears in the Boston Pilot.

It begins when the Boston emigrant commissioner places an ad looking for a Patrick McDermott to claim his wife and four children recently arrived from Ireland. The column continues until 1921 and assists in reuniting many families. Prof. Ruth-Ann Harris compiles a genealogical database from the columns, which is launched as a website on March 17, 2005.
