Federal Street Bridge opens.

Also known as the Free Bridge, it spans the Fort Point Channel between downtown Boston and South Boston on the site of today’s Dorchester Avenue Bridge. Originally built as a retractable bridge, it is rebuilt as a fixed span in 1859 and again in 1873.
