Cummins (Maria) is born in Salem.

The daughter of Judge David Cummins, Maria Cummins moves with her family to today’s 278 Bowdoin Street in approximately 1835. She attends Mrs. Catherine Sedgewick’s Young Ladies’ School in Lenox. Cummins’ first novel, The Lamplighter, is published in 1854 and proves to be very popular. She goes on to publish three more. Cummins dies in 1866.
