Freedom’s Journal is established.

February 20, 1827

Founded by George Holmes, John Hilton, Rev. Thomas Paul, and others at a meeting in the home of David Walker at today’s 81 Joy Street, it soon moves to New York City, where it is published by Samuel Cornish and John Russwurm. The first national African-American newspaper in the U.S., in addition to news, it prints birth, marriage, and death announcements related to the black communities of various cities, including Boston. The paper continues to publish until 1829.
