United States Hotel is built.

It is located at today’s 158 Beach Street. Guests include Daniel Webster and Charles Dickens. Enlarged twice, it is the largest hotel in the city with 500 rooms by 1859. An addition by Winslow & Wetherell is built in 1894. The hotel closes on August 16, 1929, and is demolished in 1946.
