Jean-Louis Cheverus is named bishop of Montauban, France.

Two hundred leading citizens of Boston – all of them Protestant – protest his reassignment, declaring, “We hold him to be a blessing and a treasure in our social community, which we cannot part with, and if withdrawn from us, can never be replaced.” Nevertheless, the appointment stands and Cheverus leaves Boston on September 26, 1823.
