Rice (Alexander H.) is born in Newton.

August 30, 1818

Alexander Rice graduates from Union College and becomes a successful manufacturer in Boston. He serves on the Boston School Committee and Boston Common Council, as mayor of Boston (1856-57), in the U.S. House of Representatives (1859-67), and as governor of Massachusetts(1876-79). Rice lives at 34 Union Park. Described by John T. Galvin as “The most successful politician-businessman Boston has ever known,” he dies on July 22, 1895, in Melrose, and is buried in Newton Cemetery [Forest Hills Cemetery].
