Andrew (John A.) is born in Windham, Maine.
May 31, 1818
The son of Jonathan and Nancy (Green) Andrew, John Andrew graduates from Bowdoin College, and moves to Boston in 1837 to study and practice law, living initially at 110 Charles Street. Andrew marries Eliza Jones Hersey in 1848. He becomes an abolitionist and a member of the Vigilance Committee and Underground Railroad. A “Conscience Whig,” he helps found the Massachusetts Free Soil Party and subsequently the Republican Party in Massachusetts. Andrew serves in the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1858-60) and, as governor (1861-66), creates the Fifty-Fourth Massachusetts regiment in 1863.* Andrew dies in Boston on October 30, 1867, and is buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery.
