Provident Institution for Savings opens.

February 19, 1817

It is located initially in the Old Court House. The first savings bank in Boston and second in the U.S. (after the Philadelphia Savings Fund society, est. December 2, 1816), it is incorporated on December 13, 1816. The bank subsequently moves to 30 Tremont Street, then to its longtime location at 37 Temple Place in February 1856. The wooden front door of that building was made from some of the oak used to build the USS Constitution and is remade into a chair in the bank.
