City Mission Society is established.

1816

Originally the Society for the Religious and Moral Education of the Poor, it is founded by clergy and members of Old South Church and the Park Street Church. The oldest, multi-social service organization in New England and second oldest in the U.S., its purpose is to promote the “moral and religious instruction of the poor.” It establishes neighborhood centers in 1821, and then summer camps, and other programs, adopts its current name in 1983, and continues in operation today.
