North American Review is first published.

May 31, 1815

(May) Originally the North American Review and Miscellaneous Journal and founded by William Tudor and others, it is printed by James Munroe and Company at today’s 280 Washington Street (then 134 Washington Street). Jared Sparks is the first editor. W.S. Tryon later describes it as, “The oldest existing magazine in America, the most scholarly, the most honored, and the most unreadable.” The magazine moves to New York in the late 1870s, suspends publication in 1940, and resumes publication at the University of Northern Iowa in December 1968.
